PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team's incredible six-year championship streak came to an end on Thursday afternoon, as YU suffered a hard-fought Skyline Conference semifinal loss to Manhattanville College by a score of 5-3 at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts.
After dropping their regular season encounter, 9-0, back on April 23, the Maccabees (2-4) improved during their head-to-head playoff matchup with the Valiants (5-1) by claiming three flights, including a 2-1 record in doubles play.
"This was certainly a unique year," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Jon Rubinstein said. "We usually play 20 matches starting in February. We end the season just rounding into mid-season form."
After the Blue and White fell behind, 1-0, in doubles play, senior
Amram Wahnon and second-year player
Eitan Jeselsohn claimed No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-4 to even up the match. Senior
Yoni Sacknovitz and junior
Aaron Cohen capped off doubles play with an 8-6 victory at the second position to give the Macs a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles portion of the contest.
Yeshiva battled to a third set in three of the singles flights, including the unfinished matchup at the No. 2 position, but fell short in the two completed three-set battles. Sacknovitz capped off his collegiate career with a victory at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-1. It was not enough as senior Alex Fleischman's rubber-set victory at the No. 3 position clinched a berth in the Skyline Championship match for the Valiants.
"The guys were really starting to pick it up but unfortunately we just didn't make it through to the finals," Rubinstein said. "We had a great run these past six years and now the entire conference has gotten deeper. Hopefully, we will be ready for the challenge next year and get back to our winning ways."
Manhattanville will host Farmingdale State College for the Skyline Championship, and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, on Sunday. The Rams were 5-3 winners over the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the other league semifinal match on Thursday.
Congratulations to our graduating seniors, Wahnon, Sacknovitz, and
Dylan Ohayon. Champions on and off the court, we wish them the very best.
"I will miss our seniors Amram, Sack, and Dylan," Rubinstein said. "They were great teammates and improved so much over the years."
The Yeshiva University men's tennis team's streaks of six straight Skyline Championships and 38 consecutive league victories both came to an end this year. However, the Maccabees will look to start another incredible run in 2021-22.
