Men's Soccer Holds Off St. Joseph's University Long Island for Key Skyline Road Victory

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, as the Maccabees knocked off Skyline-rival St. Joseph's University Long Island, 3-1, at the SJNY Outdoor Field Complex. YU extends its unbeaten streak to seven matches, advancing its record to 7-1-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league play. This marks the first conference loss of the year for St. Joseph's Long Island (6-2-0, 3-1-0 Skyline).

The Golden Eagles (6-2-0, 3-1-0 Skyline) had the edge in shots, 13-11, but the Maccabees had the advantage in shots that were on target, 6-5. St. Joseph's Long Island had the slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4.

"It was a strong performance from the program against a previously unbeaten team in the league," Yeshiva University Head Coach Tobias Esche said. "It was a hard-fought game from both sides. I'm proud of the team for staying in control of the game until the end."

Senior goalkeeper Benjamin Brener once again had a solid performance in net for the Maccabees, stopping four shots to pick up his sixth victory of the season, and advancing his undefeated record to 6-0-1. Sophomore Josh Lehr made three saves for the Golden Eagles.

Yeshiva opened the scoring less than 15 minutes into the contest, as junior Yonatan Reiter took a feed from senior Ethan Fettaya and poked the ball into the net on the left wing to give the Blue and White a 1-0 advantage. St. Joseph's Long Island had an opportunity to tie it up during the 39th minute but freshman Nick Pensavalle's line drive shot was denied by Brener. YU went into the intermission up by one goal.

During the 73rd minute, Yeshiva struck again as junior Alejandro Saul deflected the ball to classmate Josh Ziarno who beat the goalkeeper for his seventh goal of the year to give the Maccabees a 2-0 hold with 17:08 left to play.

The Golden Eagles answered 1:57 later, as junior Chris Veintimilla found the back of the cage to slice the Macs' lead in half, at 2-1, with 15:11 remaining. Classmate Mike McGwire and freshman Sean Gordon were credited with the assists.

With momentum on their side, the Golden Eagles had an opportunity to tie it, but rookie Lucas Pelaez's shot was stymied by Brener with 8:49 to go.

With 1:49 remaining, Fettaya buried his fifth goal of the year to pad Yeshiva's benefit to 3-1. Josh Ziarno earned the assist on the Macs' insurance goal.

Just over 30 seconds later, St. Joseph's Long Island had a chance to pull to within one, but Pelaez's shot was denied by Brener.

The clock ran down to zero and Yeshiva secured the key conference victory.

Yeshiva will return to the pitch on Sunday, October 23, for a Skyline showdown at Farmingdale State College. The key conference match will begin at 12:00 p.m.
