RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team dropped its Skyline Conference contest to College of Mount Saint Vincent, 58-49, at Peter Jay Sharp Center on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees fall to 7-13 overall (5-13 Skyline), while the Dolphins advance to 16-4 for the season (14-4 Skyline).
The Maccabees got off to a strong start by building a nine-point lead in the first half, However, the big blow for the Macs was a 22-9 run by the Dolphins, in the final 8:05 of the third quarter, that turned a 30-28 YU lead into a 50-39 hold for Mount Saint Vincent after 30 minutes of play. The Maccabees could not generate a consistent run in the fourth quarter to get them back into the game as the Dolphins secured the conference victory.
Leading the way for the Maccabees during the contest was junior
Daniella Rothman who had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Shai Rahamim netted 13 points and brought down three boards. Junior
Yuval Nitzan had a productive game with 11 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists, and a block.
Yeshiva came storming out of the gate as a jump shot by Rahamim gave the Maccabees an early 10-3 benefit, with 3:52 to go in the opening quarter. Later in the stanza, Rahamim buried a triple that gave YU its largest lead of the game, at 15-6, with 2:54 to go in the first stanza. The Dolphins scored the final three points of the quarter to narrow the Blue and White's lead to 15-9 after 10 minutes of play.
Rothman opened the second quarter by burying a jump shot to extend YU's advantage to 17-9, less than a minute in. Mount Saint Vincent countered by going on an 11-2 run to jump out in front, 20-19, with 5:15 left to play in the half. Later in the quarter, with Yeshiva down 24-23, Rahamim drained another 3-point field goal to put YU back in front with 1:09 left in the second period. Mount Saint Vincent would respond as a jump shot by sophomore Melanieann Broderick, with 41 ticks left, tied the game at 26 points apiece and that would be the score heading into the intermission.
After Yeshiva fell behind by two to start the third, Rothman and sophomore
Daniella Bessler combined for back-to-back layups to allow the Macs to retake the lead, at 30-28, with 8:28 to go in the stanza. From that point on, the Dolphins went on a 22-9 run during the remainder of the third quarter to take a commanding 50-39 advantage heading into the final period of regulation time.
The Maccabees managed to pull to within single digits a couple of times during the fourth quarter, but could not rally to get the game to within striking distance as Mount Saint Vincent went on to earn the Skyline victory.
For Yeshiva, junior
Gabrielle Kupferman had five points and four rebounds. Bessler tallied four points and six boards.
For Mount Saint Vincent, junior Kira Villegas had 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Classmate Amber Been generated 11 points, six boards, three assists, and a pair of steals. Senior Victoria Hanley finished with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while sophomore Kayla Hanley had nine points, four assists, three steals, and just as many caroms.
Yeshiva will host first-place Mount Saint Mary College, in a Skyline Conference contest at Peter Jay Sharp Center, on Thursday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Prior to the game, we will have a Senior Night Ceremony for graduating seniors
