WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped a pair of Skyline games to Purchase College, at Silver Lake Park, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees (2-9, 0-6 Skyline) dropped the first game, 5-0, and fell in the second contest by a score of 19-3.
The Panthers (4-7, 2-0 Skyline) kicked off the opening matchup by scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. However, graduate student
Dovie Solomon settled in on the mound for the Maccabees and pitched three straight scoreless innings. Purchase added two more runs in fifth to extends its lead to 5-0. However,
Dovie Solomon pitched two more scoreless innings, without giving up a hit in that span, to earn the complete game.
The Maccabees could not generate any offense as the Panthers went on to earn the victory in game one. Senior
Ari Rosenberg, classmate
Max Leibowitz, third-year player
Judah Blonder, and sophomore
Joshua Mintz each produced a single at the plate for the Maccabees. Junior
Eliyahu Solomon worked a walk.
For the Panthers, sophomore Justin Doskoez struck out six YU batters to earn the complete-game shutout victory.
In game two, the Maccabees entered the bottom of the first inning down 1-0. With runners on second and third, and nobody out, sophomore
Sammy Greenberg drilled a single down the right field line to score Leibowitz and Rosenberg to propel the Macs to a 2-1 advantage. The two run scorers each produced a single earlier in the frame to set up Greenberg's two-RBI hit. However, the Panthers were able to force the Maccabees to ground into an around-the-horn double play to disrupt the rally.
The Panthers added a run in the second to tie the game. Purchase's bats exploded in the next few innings, scoring three runs in the third, and five each in the fourth and fifth innings, to take a commanding lead it would not relinquish. Yeshiva got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, as Greenberg was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn the RBI, as
Eliyahu Solomon crossed home plate for Yeshiva. It was not enough as Purchase went on to earn the sweep.
Junior Ryan Castrataro earned the win on the mound for Purchase as he struck out six YU batters in six innings pitched. Freshman Mason Compton threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. For Yeshiva, Rosenberg pitched a hitless seventh inning.
At the plate for YU, Rosenberg went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, while Leibowitz had two hits in four at bats.
Eliyahu Solomon produced a single, while Mintz earned a base on balls.
Yeshiva will travel to the Bronx, on Wednesday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Lehman College. First pitch at the Lehman College South Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
