BRONX – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Lehman College, 14-2 and 12-2, at the Lehman College South Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Maccabees' (2-11) lineup had a strong top of the first inning of the opening game. Senior
Max Leibowitz led off the game with a bunt single. After he went to second, he eventually stole third. Leibowitz then scored on an error to give YU a 1-0 advantage. After sophomore
Joshua Mintz reached first, he stole two bases, while classmate
Sammy Greenberg drew a walk. With runners on the corners, and nobody out, senior
SJ Tannenbaum slapped an infield single to third that scored Mintz to extend YU's advantage to 2-0. The Lightning (2-2) were able to escape the jam without more damage.
The Macs' pitching staff could not contain Lehman's bats as the Lightning scored multiple runs over the next four innings on their way to a game one victory.
For YU, Tannenbaum went 3-for-3 at the plate. Senior
Adam Zahler went 2-for-2, including a double. Greenberg had a single and two walks, while graduate student
Dovie Solomon earned a base on balls. Senior
Jacob Schwartzman also drew a walk.
On the mound for the Lightning, junior Randy Polanco earned his first victory of the season.
Game two had a similar start for YU's lineup. Leibowitz led it off with a single and then he stole second. He eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Greenberg to put the Maccabees up, 1-0.
In the home half of the first, senior Kyle James drilled the ball over the center field fence for a solo home run to tie the game at one. The Lightning added three runs in the second to take a 4-1 hold.
Yeshiva got one run back in the top of the fourth, as senior
Joey Kalish drilled an RBI single to right field, scoring Greenberg for Yeshiva's second run of the game. It would not be enough for YU as Lehman scored six runs in the fifth on its way to its second victory of the afternoon.
For Yeshiva, Greenberg went 2-for-3, while junior
Ari Rosenberg produced a single and stole a base. Kalish singled in both of his at bats.
Sophomore Tran Hennessy picked up the win on the mound for Lehman.
Yeshiva will take on The City College of New York, in a doubleheader on the campus of Bronx Community College, on Friday morning. First pitch is slated for 10:00 a.m.
