Men's Volleyball Suffers Another Five-Set Heartbreaker to Sarah Lawrence College

BRONXVILLE – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped another heartbreaking five-set thriller to Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday evening. This time, the match was played at the Campbell Sports Center. Set scores were 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, and 15-12. The Gryphons (10-9, 7-2 Skyline) won the previous five-set match at Max Stern Athletic Center, this past Sunday afternoon.

It was a strong match defensively for Yeshiva (5-8, 4-6 Skyline) as six players reached double figures in digs.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was senior Amitai Kolom who tallied 16 kills and 15 digs. Classmate Benjamin Smillie also had a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Senior Michael Stark had a team-high 19 digs, while third-year player Benjamin Goldstein had five kills, 36 assists, 15 digs, and a pair of aces. Junior Shmuel Aberman produced five kills, 15 digs, and a pair of assists. Classmate Asher Kirshtein recorded 14 digs and four kills.

The Maccabees led from wire-to-wire in the opening set. In the late stages of the first game, Goldstein and Kolom combined for back-to-back kills to give the Blue and White a 22-12 benefit. However, the Gryphons countered with seven straight points to pull to within three. Goldstein disrupted the opposition's momentum by slamming home a kill to put YU's hold back up to four, at 23-19. After the Gryphons scored the next point, Goldstein answered with another successful attack to give the Macs a set-point opportunity. The Maccabees then earned the next point to clinch the game and claim the 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second stanza, Sarah Lawrence went on a 6-1 run to inflate its advantage to 14-8. The Maccabees kept hanging around but could not generate a consistent rally to get back into the set as the Gryphons successfully tied the match at one game apiece.

The Gryphons had the lead throughout the third set, as their second game-victory of the evening put YU on the brink.

The fourth game was a lot more competitive. Tied at 17, Smillie provided back-to-back kills, and Goldstein added a service ace, to put the Blue and White in front, 20-17. The Maccabees eventually ended up with a set-point opportunity at 24-19. However, Sarah Lawrence rallied with four straight points to cut YU's benefit to one. However, Kolom tallied a kill off a feed from Goldstein to force a fifth and deciding game.

Sarah Lawrence shook off the fourth-set loss by scoring eight straight points in the fifth game to take a commanding 9-1 hold. Down 14-6, the Maccabees would not go down without a fight. Smillie's pair of kills propelled YU to six straight points to pull to the Macs within 14-12. However, sophomore Nate Davis tallied the kill to clinch the Skyline victory for Sarah Lawrence College.

For the Macs, junior Eliezer Benjamin added seven kills, five digs, two assists, and a service ace. Sophomore Yaakov Strickon slammed home a kill.

For the Gryphons, Davis put up monster numbers with 40 kills, 23 digs, six service aces, and three assists. He scored 46 points and had a hitting percentage of .214. Sophomore Lukas Gates led all players with 30 digs, while junior Lance De Leoz had 12 digs of his own.

Yeshiva will take on College of Mount Saint Vincent, in a Skyline match at Peter Jay Sharp Center, on Sunday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
