PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to St. Joseph's College Long Island, 11-2 and 29-3, at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Maccabees (2-17, 0-12 Skyline) trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the third inning. Junior
Justin Hanelin, senior
Max Leibowitz, and junior
Ari Rosenberg each produced singles to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore
Sammy Greenberg hit a long fly ball to center field which was caught, but deep enough to score Hanelin to tie the game at one. During the next at bat, Leibowitz stole third and then scored on a throwing error to give the Maccabees a 2-1 lead. The Golden Eagles (9-4, 8-0 Skyline) were able to escape the jam without more damage.
Sophomore
Joshua Mintz started the game on the mound for YU. After giving up a run in the first inning, he threw three consecutive shutout innings, which includes him retiring eight consecutive batters. The Golden Eagles' lineup eventually exploded as the Golden Eagles scored five runs in the fifth, and then five more in the sixth, on their way to the victory.
For the Maccabees, Rosenberg also drew a walk and stole a base. Mintz was productive at the plate with a single, while Greenberg and senior
Judah Blonder also reached base with a single.
On the mound, senior Kevin Yohe got the win for the Golden Eagles by striking out five batters and giving up just one earned run in six innings pitched.
In game two, St. Joseph's Long Island scored seven runs in the opening inning and never looked back. The Maccabees got three runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of Leibowitz, but it would not be enough.
For the Macs in game two, Leibowitz had another stolen base, while Rosenberg singled and stole a base of his own. Mintz, junior
Shai Rosalimsky, and classmate
Eliyahu Solomon each scored a run. Blonder and Hanelin both drew a walk.
On the mound, sophomore Sean Brody got the win for the Golden Eagles as he struck out eight batters in five innings pitched.
Yeshiva will host Maritime College, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Overpeck Park, on Friday morning. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
