Men's Volleyball Concludes 2022 Skyline Play With Losses to Ramapo and Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team concluded its 2022 Skyline season with a pair of losses to Ramapo College and Purchase College, at the Purchase College Gymnasium, on Sunday afternoon.

In the match against Ramapo, set scores were 25-9, 25-17, and 25-15. The Roadrunners (15-2, 11-3 Skyline) did not trail at all during the first and second sets. However, during the second game, Yeshiva went on a 7-1 run to tie it up at 12 points apiece. Later in the set, a kill by senior Alon Jakubowitz tied it up at 14. However, an 8-1 run by Ramapo put the set out of reach for the Maccabees. YU had a brief lead at the beginning of the third set, but Ramapo quickly erased it and went on to earn the sweep.

For the Maccabees, senior Amitai Kolom slammed home seven kills and produced three digs. Classmate Benjamin Goldstein recorded 14 assists with four digs. Jakubowitz produced five kills, while classmate Michael Stark chipped in on defense with three digs. Third-year player Steven Zelmanovich generated three kills and a pair of digs, while senior Avi Braun added four digs. Junior Shmuel Aberman had a kill, plus an assist, while sophomore Akiva Kamornick and junior Asher Kirshtein each tallied a dig.

In the match against Purchase, set scores were 25-17, 25-12, and 26-24. YU had a 9-8 benefit in the opening set. However, a 7-1 run by Purchase (7-15, 6-8 Skyline) put the game out of reach for YU. In the second set, a kill by Zelmanovich gave the Maccabees a 4-2 advantage. The Panthers countered with seven unanswered points to take the lead for good on their way to a 2-0 lead in the match. The Macs got off to a good start in the third set, as a kill by Jakubowitz gave the Blue and White a 16-12 advantage. Purchase scored the next four points to tie it up. Later in the stanza, Zelmanovich and Braun tallied back-to-back kills to propel YU to a 20-17 benefit. With Yeshiva up, 23-22, Jakubowitz scored a kill to give the Maccabees a set-point opportunity. However, the Panthers scored four straight points to clinch the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.

Jakubowitz had a solid match with seven kills, eight digs, two blocks, and a service ace. Goldstein tallied 20 assists, two digs, a kill, and an ace. Kolom had a team-high eight kills with four digs. Zelmanovich provided five kills and four digs. Braun added three digs, while Aberman produced a kill and a pair of digs. Kirshtein had a kill and a block, while junior Eliezer Benjamin generated a kill, a service ace, and a dig. Stark chipped in with a kill and an assist, while Kamornick recorded a dig.
