PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, 28-7 and 24-3, at Overpeck Park on Friday morning.
In game one, the Bears (9-23, 7-11 Skyline) scored six runs in the opening frame to take the lead for good. The Maccabees scored twice in the bottom of the third. They first got on the board when senior
Max Leibowitz stole second base which allowed classmate
Jacob Schwartzman to score from third on the throw. Leibowitz ended up scoring Yeshiva's second run on a fielding error, later in the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Leibowitz produced an RBI single that allowed senior
Judah Blonder to cross home plate for YU's third run of the game.
The Blue and White scored four runs in the home half of the seventh. The first two came courtesy of a two-RBI single off the bat of junior
David Price that scored classmate
Ari Rosenberg and then Leibowitz. Price ended up scoring thanks to an RBI single by sophomore
Joshua Mintz. In the next at bat, Blonder drove in senior
David Kreisberg with a base hit. It would not be enough as the Bears claimed the victory in game one.
For Yeshiva, Leibowitz went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases. Blonder went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of stolen bases. Juniors
Adam Zahler and
Eliyahu Solomon each drew a walk, while Rosenberg and Schwartzman each stole a base. Senior
SJ Tannenbaum also reached first. Senior
Joey Kalish started the game and produced six fly outs and a pair of ground outs.
Sophomore Thomas Jankowksi was credited with the win out of the bullpen for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
In game two, the Bears scored eight runs in the opening inning to take the lead for good. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore
Sammy Greenberg crossed home plate for Yeshiva's first run of the game. In the next inning, Leibowitz produced yet another RBI single, scoring
Eliyahu Solomon. Leibowitz ended up scoring thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Greenberg. However, St. Joseph's ended up with the game two victory to earn the sweep.
For YU, Leibowitz earned two more stolen bases. Rosenberg singled and had a stolen base of his own.
Eliyahu Solomon drilled a triple, while Blonder raked a double. Kreisberg, Mintz, and senior
Justin Hanelin each reached base with a single.
On the mound, graduate student
Dovie Solomon started the game for the Maccabees and struck out seven batters. Senior
Rafi Jacobs fanned two opposing hitters in his appearance out of the bullpen.
For the Bears, freshman Ryan Wnorowski got the win in relief.
It was Senior Day as Yeshiva University honored its 11 graduating seniors,
Leib Fant, Schwartzman, Hanelin, Zahler, Jacobs, Kreisberg, Leibowitz, Tannenbaum,
Dovie Solomon, Kalish, and Blonder with a ceremony prior to the opening game.
Yeshiva will conclude the Skyline portion of its schedule on Sunday, with a twin bill at Mount Saint Mary College, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
