TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought tie in its Skyline contest with the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 2-2, at Votee Park on Sunday evening. Both teams earn a point in the Skyline standings.
It was a very evenly played match as each team produced seven shots on goal. Merchant Marine (1-2-2, 0-0-1 Skyline) had a very narrow edge in total shots, 16-15, and had 11 corner kick opportunities compared to Yeshiva's (2-1-1, 1-1-0) five.
In goal, fourth-year player
Nicolas Dlugach made five saves for the Macs. His counterpart, senior Chase Miller, made just as many.
The Mariners struck first off the corner kick, just over six minutes in, as freshman Wes Ferry headed the ball past Dlugach, deep inside the box, to give the visiting team a 1-0 advantage. Yeshiva responded by taking control of play and earning several scoring opportunities.
The Maccabees finally cashed in during the 33
rd minute. Junior
Lucas Baredes traveled with the ball down the left side of the field, and from 15 yards out he fed it to classmate
Rafael Cohen who tipped the ball into the back of the cage to tie the contest up at one goal apiece.
Merchant Marine had a couple of point-blank chances during the final few minutes of the opening half, but Dlugach blocked two shots from going in. The two teams went into the intermission tied at one.
In the opening minutes of the second half, YU's defense withstood two corner kick opportunities by USMMA. Yeshiva was awarded on the other end, as senior
Ethan Fettaya sprinted down the field and found Baredes, who dribbled the ball and the beat the opposing goalkeeper one on one to give YU a 2-1 lead with 31:50 left to play.
Merchant Marine once again took advantage of a corner kick opportunity in the 72
nd minute, as junior Miguel Millan headed the ball into net, from inside the box, to even the match at two goals apiece. Sophomore Derek Vanasse notched his second assist of the evening.
The visiting team had three straight corner kick opportunities down the stretch, but YU's defense didn't break, and the match remained tied. Dlugach made a timely save during the 79
th minute to keep the contest knotted at two.
Yeshiva had a golden chance to regain the advantage with less than five minutes remaining, but sophomore
Gabe Einhorn's shot hit the crossbar.
Neither team could bury a third goal and the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
For the Maccabees, Baredes now has four goals and a pair of assists this year.
The Maccabees will return to Votee Park on Thursday evening for a Skyline match against Maritime College. The action begins at 7:00 p.m.
