FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Yeshiva University women's tennis team earned an impressive victory over John Jay College, 6-3, at the USTA National Tennis Center on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees reach the .500 mark at 3-3, while the Bloodhounds drop to 1-1.
The Macs went 2-1 in doubles play and then claimed four of the six singles courts to clinch the team victory. All six points for Yeshiva came courtesy of first-year collegiate players.
Rookie sensation
Shira Adler once again had a strong match, winning at No. 2 doubles with fellow rookie
Nicole Abittan, 8-4, and then earning a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Abittan also picked up her second point of the match by winning the fifth singles position, 6-1, 6-2.
Newcomers
Sarah Leiderman and
Sarah Grunseid combined forces to dominate at No. 3 doubles, 8-2. Leiderman also won every game in both sets at No. 4 singles. Junior
Prisylla Mutchnik cruised to a win at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
"We have had a lot of tough matches in a short amount of time which have consisted of gritty wins, hard loses, and lots of lessons both on and off the court," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Danielle Carr said. "The women should be applauded for their hard work and success this season. We are very proud of them, especially the new faces and the freshman, who have been forced to adapt and learn a lot on the fly."
Yeshiva will host Manhattanville College, in a key Skyline Conference contest, on Wednesday evening. First serve at the USTA National Tennis Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. It will be Senior Night as Yeshiva University will honor its women's tennis graduating seniors, Abittan,
Elisheva Gofman, and
Danya Parker with a ceremony prior to the start of the match.
