NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to earn a key come-from-behind Skyline victory over SUNY Old Westbury, 2-1, at Votee Park on Thursday evening. The Maccabees extend their unbeaten streak to six matches and advance to 6-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in Skyline play.
The Panthers (1-5-1, 0-2-1 Skyline) grabbed the lead late in the first half, thanks to a penalty kick goal by junior Cristian Garay with less than two minutes to go before the break. The Macs trailed 1-0 heading into the intermission.
Yeshiva kept peppering the net during the early stages of the second period but could not capitalize. That all changed when senior
Ethan Fettaya drew a foul inside the box to award YU with a penalty kick opportunity during the 73
rd minute. Junior forward
Lucas Baredes took advantage by drilling the ball past the goalkeeper to even the match at a goal apiece.
Around six minutes later, Yeshiva executed a corner kick. The ball landed to senior
Alexandre Assouline who crossed the ball into the box, and it was tipped inside the net off the head of junior
Rafael Cohen, on the right wing, to give the Maccabees its first lead the night at 2-1, with 11:06 left to play.
Yeshiva's defense did not allow Old Westbury to produce any shots during the remainder of the match as the Macs went on to earn the hard-fought conference victory.
"Great win despite a lot of adversity on senior night," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Tobias Esche said. "Tonight was all about the seniors. They paved the way for where we are today. Without the seniors, we could not have this win tonight. The entire team came together to overcome the adversity."
Yeshiva outshot Old Westbury, 26-9, and had the advantage in shots on goal, 10-4. The Maccabees earned seven out of the 11 total corner kicks in the contest.
Senior
Benjamin Brener made two saves to pick up his fifth victory of the season. Classmate
Nicolas Dlugach started the match for the Macs and stopped one shot. For the Panthers, graduate student James Perciballi made eight saves in goal.
Prior to the match, Yeshiva University honored its nine graduating seniors from the men's soccer team with a senior night ceremony. The honorees were Assouline,
