Women’s Tennis Stumbles at Manhattanville, Sees Winstreak Snapped

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Taking to the courts for the first time in nearly a month, the Yeshiva women's tennis team fell to Manhattanville College, dropping the tight conference dual match to the Valiant by a score of 5-4.

Struggling early on, the Maccabees took only one win of three in doubles play, heading into singles down 2-1. However, looking to turn their fortunes around, Yeshiva rallied come singles. The Macs captured three wins in solo play, falling just short of a spectacular comeback.

About the match, head coach Ira Miller had to say, "After almost a month layoff we certainly came out rusty, going down 2-1 in doubles, then losing singles matches at the one and three positions. 4-1 down we needed to win all of the remaining four singles matches. We won three of four, finally losing 10-8 in a third set superbreaker at second singles. A valiant fight. Kudos to our two Sarahs who won in singles and doubles. Very proud of the fight in YU women's tennis."

With the loss, the Macs are now 2-3, 2-2 in conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
  • Despite usually being a dominant doubles squad, the Macs came out flat, dropping all but one match.

  • Yeshiva's sole win came from the duo of Sarah Leiderman/Sarah Grunseid, as the pair of Sarahs took down the opponents, 8-5 in the third seeded match.

  • With the late success, Yeshiva went into singles down just one at 2-1.

Singles:
  • With early struggles continuing to prove a stumbling block, the Macs once again started off slow, dropping both the No. 1 and the No. 3 seeded matches.

  • However, down but certainly not out, Yeshiva surged, capturing three straight points as Anna Laufer (3-6, 6-2, 10-2), Liederman (7-6[4], 6-2) and Grunseid (6-2, 6-3) all came out on top in their respective matches, bringing the Macs within striking distance.

  • Unfortunately, Yeshiva could not close out their comeback, as Liana Friedman came up short in a grueling three-set No. 2 seeded match, falling 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. This final loss would close out the contest, as the Macs were defeated, 5-4.
