KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Taking to the court for the first time in a month, the Yeshiva women's volleyball team was downed by the United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, Oct. 12.
Offensively, the Maccabees were helmed by
Zoey Botnick and Lesnoy Charne, with Botnick notching three assists and an ace while Charne put up a team-leading mark of two kills.
On the defensive end,
Moriah Berkovitch,
Zoey Botnick and
Aleesa Elbaum all held down the floor, each tallying six digs.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-5, 0-4 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Struggling early, the Macs did not manage a kill in the first set, ultimately falling 25-3.
- Down but not out, Yeshiva fought back in the second set. Despite trailing 4-0, the Macs managed to keep pace with USMMA over the next six points, capturing four to cut their deficit to 6-4. This trend of Yeshiva resilience continued even as Merchant Marine tried to pull away, with the scoreline reading 12-7 halfway through the set. However, it was at this point that the Macs ran out of gas. While they managed to put up six more points, Yeshiva were unable to keep pace with the relentless Mariner attack, dropping the set by a score of 25-13.
- Taking their first lead of the match, a service ace from Zoey Botnick helped jump the Macs out to a 2-0 lead to kick off the third set. This advantage would not last however, as Yeshiva would cede control of the period, being held to just one kill. When all was said and done, the Maccabees lost the set 25-9, and the match 3-0.
