Men’s Soccer Survives Tough Battle With SJLI, Advances to Skyline Semi-Finals

TEANECK, NJ - Battling through the elements on a rainy night, the #3 seeded Yeshiva men's soccer team took down #6 seed St. Joseph's University Long Island in the Skyline Conference Quarterfinals, defeating the Golden Eagles by score of 2-0 on Sunday, Oct. 29.

Offensively, the Maccabees were captained by the twin headed attack of Hadar Lavinsky and Andrea Lacche, with both forwards finding the back of the net early on for Yeshiva.

On the defensive end of the ball, keeper Kellian Marty had a superb night for the Macs, securing his fourth shutout of the season and showing out with some stupendous saves to keep SJLI from the back of the net.

With the win, the Macs move on to the Skyline Semi-Finals, matching up against one of the few teams that have caused them trouble this season in Farmingdale State College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Looking to avoid the come-from-behind performance that proved necessary to take down the Golden Eagles in their regular season matchup, the Macs came out of the gate swinging, finding paydirt just seven minutes into the contest. Dribbling past multiple defenders with superior speed, Lavinsky placed a perfect shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, giving the Macs an early 1-0 lead.

  • Keeping the gas pedal firmly locked on the floor, the Macs did not let up, increasing their advantage to 2-0 in the 23rd minute when Lacche scored off of an excellent pass from Franco Busso.

  • That 2-0 scoreline would stand through the rest of the half, with Yeshiva going into the break sporting a comfortable lead.

  • Despite their dominance, Yeshiva were dealt a crushing blow in the 50th minute, when star striker Josh Ziarno was handed his second yellow card of the match and left the Macs with just ten men out on the pitch.

  • Despite being short handed, the Maccabees rallied, not allowing SJLI to cut into their lead for the remaining 40 minutes of play. A defensive unit helmed by Marty came in clutch for Yeshiva down the stretch, withstanding seven Golden Eagle Shots, five of which were deftly dealt with by the ever-reliable French keeper.

  • Despite picking up eight yellows on the night, Yeshiva persevered, ultimately walking away with the 2-0 win and punching their ticket to the Skyline Semi-Finals.
