Women’s Basketball Dominates Old Westbury For Season-Opening Victory

BRONX, NY - Opening their 2023-24 campaign up against a Skyline rival, the Yeshiva women's volleyball obliterated The College at Old Westbury, taking down the Panthers by a score of 81-46 on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score double digit points. While Yuval Nitzan and Shai Rahamim both put up stellar totals of 18 and 13 respectively, the real story of the night was Daniella Bessler's otherworldly performance. Not only did she tie for the fourth most single-game points in Yeshiva program history at 32, but she did so while dropping in three triples, grabbing 13 rebounds (six of which were offensive), tallying four assists, snagging two steals and putting up a block for good measure.

On the defensive end of the ball, Bessler joined three of her teammates with multiple steals on the night, as Jasmin Maly-Danker notched three while Nitzan and Rahamim snagged two of their own.

With the win, the Macs are now 1-0 on the season, 1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While Yeshiva kicked off the first quarter by jumping out to an early 6-0 lead, the Panthers were not prepared to allow the Macs to run away with the game, keeping the contest within reach at 8-4 and 16-10 respectively.

  • However, it was then that Yeshiva embarked on a truly unbelievable run. From the 2:30 mark in the first quarter all the way until 7:40 in the third, not only were Old Westbury held without a single point, but the Macs went on an absolute tear. Over that stretch of gametime, The Maccabees saw five different players put the ball through the hoop with Bessler, Nitzan, Rahamim, Maly-Danker and Fortune Hunan all contributing to the stretch of dominance. When all was said and done, the Maccabees had gone on a 32-0 run, ballooning their lead out to a preposterous 58-10 by the time the clock showed 9:48 left in the third.

  • Finally scoring after nearly 15 minutes of impotence, Old Westbury were able to somewhat crawl their way back to relevance, increasing their point total to 23 by the end of the third. This stretch of success would extend into the fourth quarter, as the Panthers actually outscored the Macs 23-10 in the final 10 minutes of play. Regardless of OW's best efforts however, Yeshiva's lead proved truly insurmountable, as a Maccabee squad that had long since decided to rest its starters closed out the game, 81-46.
