BROOKLYN, NY - Coming off of their first win of the season, the Yeshiva women's volleyball team fell to Medgar Evers College, losing to the Cougars by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
Offensively, the Maccabees were captained by
Charne Lesnoy and
Zoey Botnick, with Lesnoy leading the team with eight kills while Botnick notched an impressive 18 assists on the night.
Botnick's twin sister
Ashley Botnick had an impressive night on the defensive end of the ball, teaming up with
Elle Ohayon and
Aleesa Elbaum for a combined 40 digs.
With the loss the Macs sport a 1-16 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads kicked off the first set trading leads back and forth, with the advantage swinging three different times before Medgar Evers was finally able to pull away at 14-9. Despite a kill from Ashley Botnick getting the Macs within four at 17-13, they were never able to regain control of the set, ultimately falling, 25-14.
- Much like the first set, both teams went blow for blow to kick off the second, until again the Cougars were able to seize control, this time off of a 7-0 run that ballooned their advantage up to 13-8. While Yeshiva fought back, coming within one on two separate occasions, it proved too little too late, as Medgar Evers took the set, 25-19.
- Looking to finally claim a set win of their own, the Macs jumped out to an early lead in set number three and never surrendered it. While the Cougars fought hard, Yeshiva's attack proved overwhelming, as Yeshiva took the set by a score of 25-15.
- While the Cougars jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead at the beginning of set number four, the Macs were not about to lay down and surrender, claiming the next seven consecutive points and going up 11-9. Unfortunately, that lead would not last, and while Yeshiva would reclaim it at 21-19, a 6-0 Medgar Evers run closed out both the set and the match.
- Proving through stretches of dominance that they had a good chance to win, Yeshiva's downfall came through unforced errors. These mistakes included 29 attacking errors, 12 serving errors, six setting errors, and three different instances of the Macs being out of rotation on serve, thus automatically giving Medgar Evers a free point.
