PURCHASE, NY - Suffering their first conference loss of the season, the Yeshiva men's basketball team fell to Manhattanville College, dropping the game to the Valiants by a score of 67-64 on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by three sharp-shooters, with
Zevi Samet (21),
Max Zakheim (18) and
Roy Itcovichi (10) all putting up double digit points on the night. With his nine rebounds, Itcovichi came within just one board of a double-double.
On the defensive end of the ball, Yeshiva saw a stellar night out of veteran leader
Adi Markovich, with the senior snatching three steals while pulling down three rebounds of his own.
With the loss, the Macs are now 6-5, 4-1 in Skyline play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Falling behind early, the Maccabees saw Manhattanville jump out to a 7-0 lead through the first three minutes of play, before a Zakheim triple finally got YU on the board.
- Maintaining their offensive momentum, the Macs tied the game up twice at 8-all and 10-all, before seizing on their advantage and going up 17-16 off of a tough Itzcovichi layup.
- While YU's lead would not last, with the Valiant recapturing a four point margin with 7:48 left in the first half, the Macs did not allow their opponent any breathing room, keeping pace with the Manhattanville offense and even briefly recapturing the advantage at 25-24.
- Three straight missed triples over the final four minutes of the period proved the undoing of Yeshiva's run however, with six straight points from Manhattanville not only undoing YU's lead, but digging the Macs into a 30-25 hole headed into the halftime break.
- Despite a three from Dothan Bardichev opening the second half scoring and getting the Macs within three points, a 16-0 Valiant run completely erased any progress the Macs had made towards recapturing their lead, putting Yeshiva down 46-30 with 13:38 left to play.
- Down but certainly not out, the Maccabees fought back. Seemingly emboldened by the Effy Freundlich three that broke their nearly seven minute long scoring drought, YU began to chip away at their deficit over the following possessions, relying on buckets from Samet, Zakheim and Itcovichi to narrow Manhattanville's lead to just four with 6:08 left in regulation.
- A three from Samet shrank that mark even further to three, followed immediately by two drained free throws from Zakheim to make it two and then one. Finally rounding out the effort as the third Musketeer, Itkovichi drained a jumper in the paint, putting the Maccabees up by one at 62-61 with 3:03 remaining.
- Despite this unbelievable comeback, the Macs would ultimately come up short. The lead would flip flop three more times in the final three minutes of play before the Valiants reclaimed it for good, with a last second heave from Samet - that would have tied the game had it gone in - rimmed out to seal YU's 67-64 loss.
