WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team opened the 2023 season with a pair of losses to Western Connecticut State University, 19-1 and 11-1, at Silver Lake Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves (2-0) led from wire-to-wire in each game.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (0-2) in the opening contest was senior shortstop
Ari Rosenberg who slapped a single, drew a walk, and stole a pair of bases. Junior designated hitter
Sammy Greenberg scored YU's lone run of the game as he advanced home from third thanks to sophomore catcher
Mendy Kanofsky stealing second and drawing the throw, in the bottom of the fourth. Kanofsky first got on base in that inning via a walk. Junior third baseman
Aharon Weiden produced a single and stole a base. Senior right fielder
Benjamin Brener and rookie second baseman
Noah Shatkin each earned a base on balls.
It would not be enough, as Western Connecticut scored six runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of senior outfielder Nick Lepere, which put the game out of reach for Yeshiva.
On the mound, senior pitcher Connor Gannon started the game and struck out six YU batters in three innings pitched to earn the win.
In game two, Western Connecticut scored five runs in the top half of the first to take a commanding lead it would not surrender. The highlight of the big frame was a two-run single courtesy of senior shortstop Cameron Bogli.
For the Macs, junior shortstop
Joshua Mintz drilled two hits in as many plate appearances, and drew a walk. Greenberg scored his second run of the afternoon, thanks to a throwing error by the opposition. He also produced a single which eventually led to him crossing home plate in the bottom of the fourth.
On the mound, YU rookie pitcher
A.J. Zimbalist pitched two hitless shutout innings out of the bullpen and struck out a batter in the process. Senior pitcher Orlando Swift started the game for the Wolves and fanned five YU batters in three shutout innings to pick up the victory.
Yeshiva will return to Silver Lake Park next Sunday, for a pair of games against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
