BROOKLYN – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline-opening doubleheader to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, 31-2 and 16-0, at Kingsborough Athletics Field on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, Yeshiva (0-11, 0-2 Skyline) got its first run on an RBI groundout by senior first baseman
Benjamin Brener that scored sophomore center fielder
Avi Cohen from third, during the top half of the third inning. In the top of the fifth, Brener scored from third courtesy of an RBI single by senior pitcher
Adam Zahler.
It would not be enough as the Bears (5-5, 2-0 Skyline) scored eight runs in the bottom half of the first and never looked back.
For Yeshiva, Cohen went 2-for-4 and had a stolen base. Junior shortstop
Sammy Greenberg also went 2-for-4, including a double. Sophomore catcher
Mendy Kanofsky and senior right fielder
Eliyahu Solomon each reached base with a single. Rookie third baseman
Aden Frohlich earned a base on balls.
On the mound for St. Joseph's Brooklyn, junior Mike Santoriello struck out 11 batters in seven innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory.
The Bears had another big opening inning in game two, this time scoring five runs in the frame, to take the lead for good.
For the Maccabees, Cohen reached base with a single and stole second.
On the mound for St. Joseph's, graduate student Louis Lombardi struck out 10 Yeshiva hitters and gave up no earned runs in five innings pitched to earn the victory.
Yeshiva will battle College of Mount Saint Vincent, at Roberto Clemente State Park, on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
