Softball Opens 2023 Season With Pair of Losses to Valley Forge

ASTON, Pa. – The Yeshiva University softball team opened up the 2023 season with a pair of losses to University of Valley Forge, 14-0 and 20-0, at Maplezone Sports Institute on Thursday evening.

In the opening game, the Patriots (2-0) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back.

During the top of the second, junior infielder Kyra Appel led off the inning with a walk for the Maccabees. Later in the frame, rookie pitcher Alexis Leibowitz reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second. However, that was all the productivity that Yeshiva's lineup could produce, as Valley Forge added six more runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a three-run triple courtesy of sophomore second base player Keegan Thompson to help the home team pull away.

Making her collegiate debut for the Macs in the circle, Leibowitz struck out five batters in four innings pitched. Junior pitcher Laura Medio threw a no hitter for the Patriots, striking out 14 YU batters in five innings, to earn the shutout victory.

Leibowitz pitched another complete game in the second half of the doubleheader for YU, striking out one batter in the process.

After scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, Valley Forge poured on 13 runs in the bottom of the second on its way to the sweep. Sophomore centerfielder Caitlin Fischer produced a three-run triple of her own during the Patriots' big inning.

For Yeshiva, senior catcher Chana Fischer reached base with a single during the game.

In the circle for Valley Forge, rookie Ronae Young got the win by pitching four shutout innings and fanning six hitters.

Yeshiva will battle York College N.Y., in a non-conference doubleheader, next Thursday at Padavan-Preller Field. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
