BRONX – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to Lehman College, 21-0 and 19-3, at Bahoshy Field on Tuesday evening.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (2-6) during the evening was senior center fielder
Yael Dannenbaum who went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, a run batted in, and scored twice.
In game one, Lehman (4-4) scored 10 runs in the opening inning and never looked back. In the second inning, junior center fielder Lizbeth Perez drilled a three-run inside-the-park home run to left field to highlight the Lightning's strong hitting performance.
In the bottom of the fourth, Dannenbaum became Yeshiva's first base runner of the contest thanks to a double down the left field line. Later in the frame, rookie second base player
Rebecca Kalmar drew a walk to set up runners at the corners with two outs. However, Yeshiva could not get the lead runner home and Lehman went on to earn the shutout victory in game one.
In the circle for the Lightning, sophomore pitcher Samantha Nazar struck out eight YU batters to earn the complete-game shutout victory. Senior pitcher
Esther Miller pitched three innings in relief for YU, giving up just three earned runs. Sophomore pitcher
Alexis Leibowitz started the game for the Macs and struck out a pair of hitters.
In game two, Lehman scored a run in the top of the first to grab the early advantage. Dannenbaum continued her strong night for the Maccabees in the bottom frame by leading off with an infield single. Senior right fielder
Kayla Cagan then came up and grinded out an infield hit of her own to set up runners on first and second, nobody out. Two batters later, with runners on second and third with one out, junior left fielder
Kyra Appel drove in Dannenbaum with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at one run apiece. The Maccabees still had runners on the corners but could not push across the go-ahead run.
Lehman's lineup broke out by scoring four runs in the second, three runs in the third, and 11 runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach for Yeshiva.
The Maccabees got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth. During YU's productive frame, senior first base player
Emily Zrihen reached second on a throwing error and was then driven in by an RBI double to left off the bat of Dannenbaum. Up next was Cagan who singled down the right-field line to score Dannenbaum from second for the Macs' third run of the game. Junior shortstop
Jordyn Guritzky earned a base on balls to set up runners on first and second, two outs, but could not score the fourth run.
The Lightning went on to earn the sweep.
For the Maccabees in game two, Cagan went 3-for-3. Senior center fielder
Saraleah Lakritz reached base with a single.
Miller pitched a complete game for YU, and threw eight innings total during the evening.
For the Lightning, junior pitcher Sky Mercado fanned six opposing hitters, and gave up just one earned run, to earn her first victory of the season.
Yeshiva will host John Jay College, at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Friday morning. The first pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is set for 10:00 a.m.
