PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to the defending league champion St. Joseph's University Long Island, 21-2 and 23-1, at Overpeck Park on Wednesday evening.
In game one, The Golden Eagles (10-2, 2-0 Skyline) scored eight runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of senior right fielder Phil Krpata, and never looked back.
The Maccabees (0-17, 0-8 Skyline) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a two-run double down the left field line by senior pitcher
David Price. Rookie first baseman
Jacob Shakin and first-year shortstop
Jacob Rodin both scored on the play.
During the first end of the twin bill, senior center fielder
Eliyahu Solomon went 2-for-3, while Rodin, Shakin, and first-year catcher
Mendy Kanofsky each reached base with a single for the Macs. Sophomore left fielder
Avi Cohen and senior right fielder
Benjamin Brener each drew a walk with the latter stealing two bases.
For the Golden Eagles, sophomore pitcher Josh Dannenberg struck out five YU batters and gave up just two hits in four shutout innings pitched to earn the victory.
In game two, Yeshiva held St. Joseph's Long Island to just three runs during the first two innings. However, the Golden Eagles scored six runs in the third, and then eight more in the fourth, to pull away.
For the Maccabees, Cohen had a big game at the plate with a pair of singles. Kanofsky, Brener, and Rodin all produced a base hit as well.
On the mound, junior pitcher Peter Manger struck out 10 YU hitters in four innings pitched to pick up the victory for St. Joseph's Long Island. Rodin started the game for YU and fanned three batters.
Yeshiva will battle Purchase College, up in Purchase, N.Y., on Friday morning. The first pitch of the Skyline doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m.
