BRONX – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team came from behind to earn a thrilling Skyline victory over Purchase College, 5-4, at Cary Leeds Center on Tuesday evening.
With the match knotted at four, it came down to the No. 3 singles flight between senior
Eitan Jeselsohn of the Maccabees (2-9, 2-1 Skyline) and first-year student Yuta Kawamura of the Panthers (3-3, 0-1 Skyline). Jeselsohn won the first set, 6-3, while Kawamura came back to win the second, 6-4. It came down to the rubber set of the winner-take-all flight. Jeselsohn came through and won the third frame, 6-1, to clinch not only the third singles court but a key conference victory for Yeshiva.
"The MVP of today goes to our captain Eitan who battled so hard with the entire match on the line to take the deciding third set," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Jon Rubinstein said. "He won big deciding points and was absolutely clutch when we needed him the most."
The Maccabees got off to a slow start, as the Panthers claimed two out of three doubles flights to take a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play. Rookies
Mark Adler and
Harry Radinsky won YU's only doubles flight, at the third position, by a score of 8-2.
In singles play, Radinsky was victorious at the fifth spot, 6-2, 6-2, which pulled YU to within 3-2. After Purchase extended its lead to 4-2 with a win at No. 1 singles, first-year student
Israel Bussu got the Macs back on track by earning a convincing victory at the sixth singles court, 6-0, 6-1. Adler allowed Yeshiva to tie the contest at four courts apiece by claiming No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
It all came down to the No. 3 singles flight which Jeselsohn won in the deciding set to secure an important conference victory for the Maccabees.
Yeshiva will battle St. Joseph's University Long Island, in a Skyline contest out in Patchogue, N.Y., on Thursday afternoon. The first serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
