Dannenbaum Has Strong Doubleheader for Softball Team Against Sarah Lawrence College

BRONX – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader to Sarah Lawrence College, 15-2 and 18-5, at Bahoshy Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior outfielder Yael Dannenbaum had a very productive doubleheader for the Maccabees (2-17, 0-8 Skyline) as she went 4-for-6 with two runs batted in and just as many runs scored. In the second end of the twin bill, she went 3-for-3 at the plate.

In game one, the Gryphons (2-8, 2-6 Skyline) scored five runs in the top of the first and never looked back. With the Macs down 6-0 in the bottom of the second, senior infielder Elisheva Miller led off the frame with a walk. After she advanced to third, she ended up scoring on an RBI single by Dannenbaum to put Yeshiva on the board.

Sarah Lawrence eventually built its lead to 13-1. In the home half of the fourth inning, Dannenbaum picked up her second RBI of the opening contest for YU as she put the ball in play to send Elisheva Miller across home plate for her second run scored of the game.

It would not be enough as the Gryphons went on to win game one, 15-2.

For the contest, Elisheva Miller also reached base with a single as did senior infielder Esther Miller. Second-year utility player Chana Karasik also produced a single.

In the circle, rookie Alexis Leibowitz struck out a pair of batters in five innings pitched and earned a base on balls at the plate.

For Sarah Lawrence, rookie pitcher Shirin Pechefsky fanned seven hitters to earn the complete-game victory.

In game two, the Gryphons' lineup exploded for 12 runs in the opening inning to take the lead for good. In the bottom of the first, Dannenbaum got Yeshiva going as she slapped a single through the left side. She eventually scored on an RBI single courtesy of Elisheva Miller.

Sophomore outfielder Rebecca Kalmar led off the home half of the second with a scorching triple down the right field line but the Maccabees could not drive her in.

YU's bats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The highlights of YU's big frame were RBI singles by both Elisheva Miller and Esther Miller, followed by an RBI walk with the bases loaded by senior catcher Chana Fischer, which scored Leibowitz for YU's fifth run. That would cap off the scoring for the Macs, as Sarah Lawrence went on to win the second contest, 18-5, and clinch the sweep.

For the Maccabees, Kalmar went 2-for-2 and added a walk. Elisheva Miller went 2-for-3, while junior outfielder Tova Hakakian and Fischer each reached base with a single. Dannenbaum scored two runs, while Hakakian and Kalmar each crossed home plate as well.

For Sarah Lawrence, first-year pitcher Isabella Zuniga tossed three innings in relief, and struck out five batters, to get the win.

Yeshiva will host Purchase College, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Bahoshy Field, on Sunday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. It is Senior Night and Yeshiva University will be honoring 10 graduating seniors with a ceremony in between games.
