Men's Tennis Grinds Out Key Skyline Win Over Merchant Marine

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team earned a hard-fought Skyline victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 6-3, at Brookdale Park Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Maccabees (4-9, 4-1 Skyline) won two out of three doubles flights and then went 4-2 in singles competition. Four out of the six singles flights came down to the third set with Yeshiva winning three of them. There were four singles matches that had seven-point tiebreakers. The Maccabees won three of those tight battles.

"Great win for the Macs today," Yeshiva University Head Coach Jon Rubinstein said. "The guys battled so hard. Winning those tiebreakers and saving match points on three courts. I couldn't be prouder of the fighting spirit these men have!"

After falling behind in doubles, 1-0, rookies Michael Natkin and Mark Adler were triumphant for the Maccabees at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Then, senior Eitan Jeselsohn and first-year player Samuel Pasternak claimed No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

In singles play, senior Yoni Mayer dominated at the No. 2 court, 6-2, 6-2, which put YU ahead by a score of 3-1 in the match. Merchant Marine pulled to within one by winning the fifth flight.

Natkin lost every game at the first set of No. 1 singles. He bounced back by winning the second frame, 6-2. In the third and deciding set, Natkin dug deep again and earned a narrow victory that came down to the tiebreaker, 7-6 (2) to earn the come-from-behind win at the top spot, which extended YU's lead to 4-2.

Jeselsohn came through with another key third singles flight victory, this time by scores of 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6). That clinched the victory for the Maccabees. Later in the match, Adler dug out of an early hole to claim the fourth singles position, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-3 for Yeshiva's sixth court-victory of the day.

YU will battle the defending Skyline Conference Champion Manhattanville College, on Wednesday, April 19. First serve at Manhattanville Tennis Courts is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
