PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped a Skyline Conference contest to Purchase College, 19-4, at the Purchase College Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Maccabees (0-19, 0-10 Skyline) got off to a strong start by scoring two runs in the opening frame to take the lead. It was patience at the plate that earned Yeshiva those runs as the Blue and White drew five walks during the inning. Rookie infielder
Jacob Shakin and junior third base player
Aharon Weiden each earned an RBI thanks to drawing a base on balls with the bases loaded. However, the Maccabees could not extend their lead and concluded the top of the first by leaving the bases loaded.
The Panthers (12-14, 4-4 Skyline) answered with two runs of their own in the bottom frame to tie the game. Rookie infielder Matt Castrogiovanni led off the frame with a triple and then scored on an RBI single by junior third base player Trevor Zanderzuk to slice the home team's deficit in half. Later in the frame, rookie infielder Liam Daly scored the game-tying run on an error. Yeshiva was able to escape the jam without further trouble.
In the top of the second, first-year left fielder
Avi Cohen laced a triple to right field and then eventually scored to give YU the advantage again, at 3-2.
However, the lead would not last long as Purchase scored three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of Daly, to put the home team in front by a score of 5-3. The Panthers blew the game open in the bottom of the third by pouring on six runs to take a commanding 11-3 hold.
Fortunately for Yeshiva, Cohen's strong afternoon continued in the top of the fourth, as he led off the frame with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third and then ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher
Mendy Kanofsky for YU's fourth run of the contest.
That would be all the scoring for YU, as Purchase built its lead throughout the remainder of the game to earn the Skyline victory, 19-4.
For Yeshiva, rookie shortstop
Jacob Rodin produced a double and drew a walk. Weiden produced a single, while junior infielder
Sammy Greenberg earned a base on balls and crossed home plate. First-year infielder
Nathaniel Dery, senior outfielder
Benjamin Brener, and Kanofsky each earned a free pass to first base via a walk.
For the Panthers, junior pitcher Bryan Atkinson struck out three batters in three innings out of the bullpen, while giving up just one run, to earn the win.
Yeshiva will host Manhattanville College, at Overpeck Park, on Friday morning. First pitch of the Skyline Conference doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m.
