PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference doubleheader against Farmingdale State College, 18-1 and 27-0, at Overpeck Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior third-base player
Benjamin Brener had a big afternoon for the Maccabees (0-23, 0-14 Skyline) as he went 3-for-6 during the twin bill, including a double, and added a stolen base. He also scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one thanks to an RBI single by sophomore right fielder
Aden Frohlich.
However, Brener's strong performance would not be enough as Farmingdale (15-12, 7-5 Skyline) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of the opening contest and never looked back. In game two, the Rams tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, and then broke the game open with six more in the second, to secure the sweep.
For YU in game one, graduate center fielder
Avi Braun drew two walks in his season debut. First-year left fielder
Josh Harrison and rookie first baseman
Avi Cohen each reached base with a single. Rookie pitcher
Nathaniel Dery struck out five batters and pitched a complete game for the Maccabees.
For Farmingdale, junior pitcher Daniel Molina got the win in the opening contest as he fanned six YU batters in three shutout innings pitched.
For the Maccabees in game two, Cohen and Frohlich each tacked on another single, while Harrison and rookie second baseman
Jacob Shakin each earned a base on balls. On the mound, junior pitcher
Joshua Mintz gave up no earned runs and struck out a batter in 1.1 innings of relief.
For the Rams, junior pitcher Daniel Deutsch struck out five batters in three shutout innings pitched to earn the victory on the mound.
Yeshiva will return to Overpeck Park on Friday, for a Skyline doubleheader against SUNY Old Westbury, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
