PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped two hard-fought Skyline games to SUNY Old Westbury, 5-2 and 17-0, at Overpeck Park on Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Panthers got on the board in the top of the first inning, thanks to an RBI double to right center field off the bat of sophomore first-base player Nick Papageorge. Two batter later, sophomore pitcher
Jacob Shakin got the opposing hitter to foul out to first to escape the inning without further damage.
In the home half of the first, sophomore catcher
Mendy Kanofsky and senior right fielder
Eliyahu Solomon each reached base with a single. However, they were both stranded at the end of the inning.
The Panthers eventually built their lead to 4-0. In YU's half of the fourth, senior center fielder
Benjamin Brener continued his strong hitting by lacing a double to right center field. He was able to advance to third thanks to a ground ball by rookie second-base player
Nathaniel Dery. During sophomore first-base player
Aden Frohlich's at bat, Brener took off from third and headed home. He was able to slide in under the throw to successfully steal home and put YU on the board.
On the mound for Yeshiva in the top of the fifth, Shakin held the Panthers scoreless to continue the Macs' momentum. He helped his cause in the bottom frame by leading off with a single. He then advanced to second on an infield hit courtesy of junior third-base player
Aharon Weiden. Up next was Kanofsky, who slapped an infield single of his own to load the bases with only one out. Shakin ended up scoring from third thanks to a sacrifice fly off that bat of junior shortstop
Joshua Mintz to pull the Maccabees to within a pair of runs, at 4-2. However, YU could not push across another run during the inning.
Mintz came in to pitch in relief of Shakin for YU in the top of the sixth. Old Westbury had runners on first and second, one out. The lead runner tried to steal third, but Menofsky threw to Weiden at third who tagged the runner out to prevent him from stealing the base. Mintz then got the opposing batter to pop the ball up behind the plate. Mintz ran in and caught it in foul territory for the final out of a scoreless frame.
Old Westbury did pick up an insurance run in the top of the seventh, thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third-base player Joe Morreale that scored rookie second-base player John Tardino from third. Yeshiva was able to get the final out without giving up more runs, but the Macs' lineup was retired in order during the bottom half of the seventh to clinch the victory for Old Westbury.
For the Maccabees, Kanofsky went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Weiden picked up a stolen base. On the mound, Shakin struck out three batters and gave up just three earned runs in five innings pitched. Mintz surrendered just one run in two innings of relief.
For the Panthers, rookie pitcher John Moeller fanned eight YU batters and gave up just two runs to earn the complete-game victory.
Mintz started the game for YU on the mound in game two and surrendered just two runs during the first four innings. However, Old Westbury's lineup broke through in the fifth, scoring four runs to take a commanding 6-0 advantage. The Panthers added four more runs in the sixth and then seven more in the seventh on its way to their second league victory of the afternoon.
For Yeshiva, rookie left fielder
Josh Harrison went 2-for-3 with two singles, while Weiden and Solomon each slapped a single. Brener drew a pair of walks.
For Old Westbury, sophomore pitcher Greg Vivenzio struck out nine batters to earn the complete-game shutout victory.
Yeshiva will host Mount Saint Mary College, in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Overpeck Park, on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. It's Senior Day and Yeshiva University will honor its graduating seniors on the baseball team with a ceremony prior to first pitch.
