PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team had a valiant comeback effort in game one against Mount Saint Mary College, scoring six runs in the seventh and final scheduled inning, but it would not be enough as the Macs fell to the Knights, 13-7. MSMC (11-24, 6-10 Skyline) clinched a sweep of the Skyline Conference doubleheader by winning game two, 22-1. The games were played at the Purchase College Baseball Field.
In the opening contest, junior second-base player
Sammy Greenberg led the way for the Maccabees (0-27, 0-18 Skyline) by going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. In fact, Greenberg went a combined 5-for-8 during the twin bill.
Mount Saint Mary's lineup exploded for seven runs in the top of the second of game one to take a commanding 7-0 hold. With YU down, 8-0, in the bottom of the third, senior catcher
Shai Rosalimsky and sophomore pitcher
Mendy Kanofsky combined for back-to-back walks. Rosalimsky ended up scoring thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Greenberg to pull YU to within seven runs.
The Knights were able to build their benefit to 13-1 over the course of the next two innings.
Yeshiva still trailed by that score heading to the bottom of the seventh. Junior third-base player
Aharon Weiden led off the frame with a single to left. Then, junior shortstop
Joshua Mintz and rookie first baseman
Jacob Shakin combined for back-to-back hits to load the bases with nobody out. First-year right fielder
Nathaniel Dery drove in Weiden with an RBI single up the middle for YU's second run of the game. Then, rookie left fielder
Josh Harrison produced YU's fifth single in a row to score Mintz. Shakin ended up scoring right after him, thanks to a throwing error, to shrink Mount Saint Mary's lead to 13-4.
Rosalimsky worked his second walk of the contest to load the bases once again. Two batter later, Greenberg slapped a single to right to send both Dery and Harrison home to narrow YU's deficit to 13-6. Senior center fielder
Benjamin Brener continued Yeshiva's momentum by lining a single to right, which scored Rosalimsky, but Brener was then thrown out trying to extend the single to a double. Greenberg advanced to third with two outs.
Unfortunately for the Macs, Mount Saint Mary recorded the final out to complete the win, as Yeshiva's rally fell short.
Senior pitcher Lukas Naley got the win on the mound for the Knights.
In game two, Mount Saint Mary scored five runs in the top of the first to put YU in a hole early. The Maccabees got one run back in the home half of the opening inning, thanks to an RBI triple courtesy of Brener, which scored Kanofsky.
However, the Knights scored three runs in the second, and then broke out with nine runs in the third, to take a commanding advantage they would not surrender. MSMC went on to win the second game and earn the sweep.
For the Macs, Harrison and Shakin each reached base with a single, with the former also stealing a base. Kanofsky also had a stolen base. Brener went 2-for-3.
On the mound for Mount Saint Mary, senior pitcher Christopher Snyder got the win as he struck out five batters and gave up just one run in four innings pitched.
After the games, Yeshiva University honored Brener with a ceremony on Senior Day.
Yeshiva will close out the season with a Skyline doubleheader, at Maritime College, on Sunday. First pitch at Reinhart Baseball Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
