PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped a pair of Skyline games to College of Mount Saint Vincent, 13-1 and 12-0, at the Purchase College Softball Field on Friday afternoon.
In game one, the Dolphins (20-9, 9-3 Skyline) scored four runs in the first and then tacked on six more in the second to take the lead for good.
In the top of the fifth, junior second-base player
Ashley Botnick rifled a single to left for the Macs. Two batters after senior first-base player
Saraleah Lakritz reached first on a fielder's choice, classmate
Yael Dannenbaum singled to left to load the bases with one out. Senior center fielder
Kayla Cagan stepped up to the plate and drove the ball to right field. It was caught but the ball was hit deep enough for Botnick to score YU's first run of the day.
It would not be enough as CMSV closed out the game-one victory.
For the Maccabees, Dannenbaum, rookie pitcher
Alexis Leibowitz, and senior catcher
Chana Fischer each drew a walk.
In the circle for the Dolphins, first-year pitcher Serena Duran earned her fifth victory of the season by striking out two batters and giving up no hits in two scoreless innings pitched.
In game two, the Dolphins scored two runs in the first inning, exploded for eight runs in the second, and then added two more runs in the third to earn the conference sweep.
For Yeshiva, Cagan and sophomore left fielder
Rebecca Kalmar each reached base with a single.
For Mount Saint Vincent, senior pitcher Jocelyn Vega fanned six YU batters in two shutout innings to get the win in the circle.
Yeshiva will host St. Joseph's University Long Island, in a conference doubleheader at Bahoshy Field, on Sunday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
