BRONX - The Yeshiva University softball team suffered a pair of league losses to St. Joseph's University Long Island, 24-0 and 22-0, at Bahoshy Field on Tuesday evening.
After getting shut down in the first game, the bats for the Maccabees (2-23, 0-14 Skyline) came to life in the second end of the twin bill. Senior pitcher
Kayla Cagan and classmate
Esther Miller each reached base with a single. Senior catcher
Chana Fischer, classmate
Saraleah Lakritz, second-year infielder
Chana Karasik, senior first-base player
Elisheva Miller, rookie shortstop
Alexis Leibowitz, and senior left fielder
Yael Dannenbaum each worked a walk.
However, it would not be enough as the Golden Eagles (5-21, 4-10 Skyline) scored eight runs in the opening inning to take the lead for good.
Back in game one, St. Joseph's Long Island's bats broke out with 10 runs in the top of the first to take a commanding hold it would not surrender. Sophomore third-base player Mariah Salvatto launched a grand slam over the the left field wall in the top of the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles.
It was an impressive performance by sophomore pitcher Julia Ruocchio of St. Joseph's. She pitched a perfect game in the opening contest, striking out five YU batters in the process. In game two, she went a combined three innings, fanning four hitters, and once again giving up no runs, no hits, and no walks to earn the victory in relief.
Yeshiva will battle Lehman College, in a non-conference doubleheader at Lehman College South Field, on Thursday evening. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
