Women’s Tennis Defeated by Baruch in Season-Opening Match

TENAFLY, N.J. - Playing in their first match of the 2023-24 season, the Yeshiva women's tennis team fell to Baruch College by a score of 6-3 on Friday, Sept. 1.

The Macs struggled out of the gate, dropping two of three doubles matches to go down 2-1 headed into singles play. While Yeshiva did see some success in their singles matchups, taking wins in both the No. 5 and No. 6 seeded matches, the Maccabees could not turn the contest around, ultimately losing 6-3.

About the game, first year head coach Ira Miller had to say, "A tough day against a tough team, but we fought hard on every court. Ana Laufer and Sarah Grunseid pulled off nice wins in the singles."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
  • Unable to keep pace with their Baruch opponents, the Macs dropped both their No.1 and No. 2 seeded doubles matches, with the duos of Liana Friedman/Anna Laufer and Micah Mamoun/Shira Adler falling 8-0 and 8-3 respectively.
  • Yeshiva's lone doubles win came in the No. 3 match, when the pair of Sarah Liederman/Sarah Grunseid came out on top 8-2. With the win, the Macs shrank their deficit to 2-1 going into singles.

Singles:
  • Yeshiva came out strong in singles play, seeing dominant wins out of Laufer (6-1, 6-0) and Grunseid (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches respectively.
  • Unfortunately, the Macs could not keep up that momentum in their higher seeded matches, as Friedman (6-0, 6-0), Adler (6-1, 6-0), Liederman (6-1, 6-1) and Mamoun (6-3, 6-2) all fell, sealing Yeshiva's 6-3 loss.
