Women’s Volleyball Fights Hard, Drops Match to Purchase

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Coming tantalizingly close to their first set win of the season, the Yeshiva women's volleyball team fell to Purchase College by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Offensively, the Maccabees were helmed by Talia Finn, with the middle blocker tallying team-leading marks of six kills and two service aces. Finn, alongside Aleesa Elbaum, also held down the fort defensively, with Finn notching two blocks while Elbaum put up 13 digs.

With the loss, the Macs are 0-4, 0-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting off strong thanks to lethal serving from Ashley Botnick, Yeshiva jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, seizing control of the first set. That momentum would not last however, as a 7-0 run from Purchase tied the match at 8-all, with the Macs ultimately losing their advantage when the Panthers went ahead 11-9. Down but certainly not out, the Maccabees rallied, drawing within one point of Purchase at 17-16. This effort persisted even when Purchase attempted to pull away, with three straight Yeshiva points closing the Macs' deficit to three at a scoreline of 23-20. Unfortunately, Yeshiva could not keep pace with the Purchase attack, as the Panthers claimed the final two points to take the first set 25-20.

  • Much like the opening set, the Macs kicked off the second by roaring ahead of their opponents, rocketing out to a 6-3 lead. While the Panthers would rebound, Yeshiva matched them blow for blow, seeing the contest tied four separate times from points 10 through 14. However, it was then that Yeshiva faltered, allowing an 11-2 run from Purchase to close out the set, 25-16.

  • Showing signs of greatness, the Macs once again jumped out to an early lead at the beginning of set three, holding as large a margin as five points at 12-7. Unfortunately, like the previous periods, Yeshiva could not maintain their momentum, allowing Purchase to take control of the set and ultimately win it by a score of 25-17.
