TEANECK, N.J. - Dominating on both ends of the pitch, the Yeshiva men's soccer team took down St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, defeating the Bears by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw production from up and down the depth chart, with
Vinicius Giannacini,
Franco Busso, and
Josh Ziarno all finding paydirt on the night.
Equally as commanding (if not more so) on the defensive end of the ball, the Macs completely shut out SJU, holding the Bears to just two shots on goal. On top of their control of the field, Yeshiva also kept their goal spotless, with keepers
Kellian Marty and
Eli Cohen combining for a clean sheet, the team's first of the season.
With the win, the Macs improve to 3-1-2, 3-0-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While defenses ruled the day for both squads through the first 40 minutes of play, the Macs finally broke through in the 42nd minute. On the receiving end of a beautiful string of passes from both Alejandro Saul and Andrea Lacche, Giannacini wove past his defenders, proceeding to place the ball perfectly past the outstretched fingers of the diving keeper and into the back of the net. With the goal, the graduate student gave Yeshiva a 1-0 lead going into the half, an advantage that would never be surrendered.
- Looking to build on their late success in the first half, the Macs came out of the gate roaring in the second. Intercepting an errant SJU pass nearly thirty yards from the goal just seven minutes after the opening kickoff, Busso launched a bomb of a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net, doubling Yeshiva's margin to 2-0.
- Not even thirty seconds later, the lethal Yeshiva offense struck again, this time seeing the right foot of Ziarno find paydirt. Catching a gorgeous cross from Saul, the forward slammed the ball into the goal in one fluid motion, securing the Macs' third and final score of the night.
- While SJU had their chances to stem the bleeding, the Maccabee defense, led by Lotan Sapir, shut down any chance of that happening. On the day, Yeshiva allowed just seven shots to be taken and four corner kicks, while in goal Cohen recorded his first two saves of the season.
