ORANGEBURG, NY - Taking the court for the first time in the 2024 season, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team fell to Dominican University of New York, losing to the Chargers by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by
Eli Waxman and
Jonathan Werta, with Waxman tallying one kill and two aces on the night, while Werta put up one kill and one assist.
Defensively, YU saw a stellar game out of
Andrew Pinchot. A sophomore playing in his first ever game of collegiate volleyball, Pinchot wracked up team-leading marks of one block and three digs.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Macs were able to keep set one close early on, relying on the attacking prowess of Lavi Friedman and Werta to keep themselves within striking distance. However, they simply could not keep up with Dominican's lethal attack, as the DII squad closed out the period, 25-8.
- Much like the first set, YU opened the second going blow-for-blow with the Chargers, answering a 4-0 Dominican start with a 4-0 run of their own. Despite this early success, the Macs would be held to just one more kill on the period, dropping by a score of 25-10.
- A service ace from Waxman kicked off the scoring in the third set, giving the Maccabees their first lead of the match. While this edge would quickly be snatched away, the Macs would continue to stick with the Chargers, tying the contest at 9-all. However, it was then that Dominican ran away with the set, going on a 16-6 run to close out Yeshiva, 25-15.
