Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener at Five Towns

DIX HILLS, NY - Taking on their first opponent of the 2024-25 season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell at Five Towns College, losing to the Sound by a score of 82-57 on Monday, Nov. 11.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by Shai Rahamim, with the fifth year player putting up a team-high 14 points.

Defensively, YU saw a stellar performance out of reigning  Skyline Player of the Year Daniella Bessler, as she tallied 10 rebounds and four steals.

The Macs saw a number of fresh faces take the court for the first time with Naomi Sigman, Simone Amkraut and Tali Cohen all playing their first game in blue and white.

With the loss, the Macs are now 0-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both squads traded points back and forth for the first five minutes of play, with baskets from Bessler, Sigman and Jasmin Maly-Danker carrying the Macs to a 6-5 lead. However, it was then that Five Towns not only overtook YU, but secured some breathing room, closing out the quarter with an 18-12 edge.

  • YU's deficit grew through the first four minutes of the second quarter, falling behind 30-12 with 5:50 remaining. While seven straight points from Sara Yolkut and Rahamim closed the gap to near single digits at 19-30, Yeshiva could not match the Sounds' output, going into the half down, 43-24.

  • While the Macs saw solid output thanks to the shotmaking abilities of Bessler, Amkraut and Maly-Danker, Yeshiva's deficit continued to grow, with the scoreboard reading 62-35 in favor of the Sound by the end of the third quarter.

  • By far their best quarter of the matchup, the Macs came into the fourth firing on all cylinders, even managing to outscore Five Towns by a margin of 22-20. However, the effort was not enough to overcome the Sounds' grip on the game, with the Macs dropping their season opener, 82-57.
