NEW YORK, NY - Taking on their first Skyline opponent of the season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, losing to the Mariners by a score of 68-48 on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score in double digits, with
Shai Rahamim (15),
Daniella Bessler (13) and
Jasmin Maly-Danker (10) all proving their proficiency with the ball.
On top of her point total, Bessler had a stellar outing on the defensive end, tallying three rebounds and three steals on the night.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-3, 0-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva started out slow, failing to put up any points through the first six minutes of play. While a pair of free throws from Naomi Sigman finally broke the deadlock, the Maccabee offense continued to struggle to find the basket, closing out the quarter trailing 20-10.
- YU's offense found their rhythm in the second quarter. Thanks to the shooting prowess of Bessler, Rahamim and Tali Cohen, the Maccabees embarked on a 14-7 run over seven minutes, closing within three points at 27-24. However, the effort was not enough to seize the advantage away from USMMA, as the Mariners fought back and put Yeshiva in a 36-27 hole going into the half.
- Much like the first quarter, the Mac offense stumbled coming into the second half, not finding the basket until a Rahamim triple broke the drought with 4:50 remaining in the period. Yeshiva would score just seven points in the quarter, heading into the fourth down, 54-34.
- Down but certainly not out, the Maccabees continued to push. Buckets from Bessler, Rahamim, Cohen, Maly-Danker and Simone Amkraut tallied 14 points over 10 minutes of play, but were ultimately not enough for Yeshiva to stage a comeback, dropping the contest, 68-48.
