NEW YORK, NY - Returning to non-conference play to kick off December, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to Baruch College, losing to the Bearcats by a score of 64-58 on Monday, Dec. 2.
The Maccabees were carried by
Daniella Bessler, with the star graduate student putting up a stat line of 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists. She was joined in excellence by
Shai Rahamim, who tallied 13 points, and
Naomi Sigman, who pulled down 10 rebounds.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-6 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a game that saw defenses dominate early on, both squads struggled to put up points through the first four minutes of play, with the score tied at 4-4 with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter. While Baruch would finally sneak past the Maccabee brick wall, taking a 16-4 lead over the next two and a half minutes, Yeshiva rallied late, closing that margin to 18-11 to close out the period.
- The Macs continued their run to kick off the second quarter, with buckets from Rahamim and Sigman once again tying the contest at 18-all. While a foul shot from the Bearcats put Baruch back up by one, the Maccabees responded just thirty second later, as a deep jumper from Bessler put YU up 20-19, their first lead of the game. This edge would last through the end of the half, with the Macs going into the break up, 28-27.
- The second half would see a turbulent start, with the advantage changing hands four times through five minutes before three-straight jumpers from Yolkut, Cohen and Bessler finally snagged the Macs some breathing room at 44-37. Yeshiva briefly grew their advantage further into the double digits at 48-37, and while that margin was lost to a last-second layup, the women in blue and white still carried a 48-40 edge into the final period of play.
- Despite Yeshiva's advantage remaining steady through the first two minutes, it was slowly whittled away by the Baruch attack through the next five, lasting only until a Bearcat jumper seized a 55-53 edge for the road squad with 3:38 remaining in regulation. In a quarter defined by 14 Maccabee turnovers, Yeshiva were unable to regain their standing after losing the lead, ultimately falling at home by a score of 64-58.
