Men’s Volleyball Falls at John Jay

NEW YORK, NY - Facing off against an inter-city rival, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team were defeated by John Jay College, losing to the Bloodhounds by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, Feb. 22.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by Lavi Friedman and Eli Waxman, with Friedman notching four kills on the day, while Waxman posted a team-leading mark of six assists.

Friedman also had a solid outing on defense, scooping ten digs on the night.

With the loss, the Macs are now 0-8 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs fell behind early in set No. 1, seeing the scoreboard read 13-4 after the first 17 serves. While two straight points would close YU's deficit to seven, the Maccabees were held to just one more kill on the set, falling by a score of 25-11.

  • Yeshiva took their first lead of the match at the beginning of set No. 2, capitalizing on a pair of John Jay errors to go up 2-0 on the Bloodhounds. The Maccabee lead would not last however, as a 12-2 John Jay run buried Yeshiva in an eight-point hole. While kills from Friedman and Andrew Pinchot kept the Macs competitive, the Bloodhound lead proved insurmountable, as Yeshiva dropped the set, 25-16.

  • Looking to prove their mettle against one of their toughest opponents all year, the Maccabees roared out in front at the beginning of set No. 3, relying on kills from Friedman, Amiti Trabelsi and Jonathan Werta to go up 10-3 on John Jay. This edge would not last though, as the Bloodhounds stormed back, tying the contest at 13-all just 13 serves later. Kills from Werta recaptured the YU lead, putting them up 16-14, yet a 5-1 Bloodhound run erased any hopes of a Yeshiva comeback, putting John Jay up for good. The Macs continued to fight, even managing to draw within two points at 24-22, but a final John Jay kill ended the match definitely at 25-22.
