Women’s Basketball Holds Off Sarah Lawrence In Defensive Masterclass

NEW YORK, NY - Playing in their penultimate home contest of the regular season, the Yeshiva women's basketball team took down Sarah Lawrence College, defeating the Gryphons by a score of 42-38 on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Offensively, the Maccabees were helmed by a pair of double-digit performances, with Shai Rahamim and Yuval Nitzan dropping 17 and 14 points respectively.

While Yeshiva's attack performed well, it was in their staunch defense that they really shone. Led by freshman Fortune Hunan, who put up five blocks on the night, the fourth most in YU program history, the Macs completely nullified the Gryphon offense.

Conceding only 38, the Maccabees held their opponent to the fewest total points since Jan. 23, 2023. Throughout four quarters against Yeshiva's blanketing defense, Sarah Lawrence managed just 15 field goals, shooting 25.4% from the floor.

With the win, the Macs are now 8-13, 6-10 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both squads struggled offensively throughout the first quarter, with Yeshiva only managing 11 points off of buckets from Nitzan, Rahamim, and Sara Yolkut. However, where the Maccabee attack faltered, the defense stepped up in a big way, holding Sarah Lawrence to just nine points through ten minutes.

  • In nearly a carbon copy of the first quarter, both squads scored exactly the same number of points, with the Macs putting up 11 while the Gryphons posted nine. YU were able to hold onto the lead for the vast majority of the period, losing it only briefly at 2:30 remaining, stealing it quickly back off of a jumper from Abigail Koening. When the halftime horn sounded, the Macs led by a score of 22-18.

  • Seeing their hold on the game challenged for the first time, the Maccabee offense proved truly pedestrian in the third quarter, posting only five points off of a triple from Rahamim and a layup from Yolkut. In that time, Sarah Lawrence took the opportunity to wrest the lead away, going up 28-27 by the end of the period.

  • Shaking off the stagnation of the previous quarter, the Macs exploded in the fourth, seizing back the lead for good off a Nitzan foul shot with 7:03 left in regulation. While Sarah Lawrence continued to battle, never allowing YU to truly pull away and even tying the game at 37-all, baskets from Yolkut and Rahmim proved the daggers needed to secure the win, as Yeshiva left ARC arena with a 42-38 victory.
