WEST HARRISON, NY - Playing in their first nine-inning game of the season, the Yeshiva baseball team fell to John Jay College, losing to the Bloodhounds by a score of 13-4 on Sunday, Mar. 10.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by
Coby Kamish, with the freshman phenom batting in a team-leading mark of three RBIs, while also notching two hits and a run.
From the mound,
Adam Zahler pitched seven innings, facing 28 batters and recording a strikeout, while surrendering 10 hits and nine runs.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- John Jay dominated the game through the first seven and a half innings, putting up two runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, four in the sixth and four in the eight, earning a commanding 13-0 lead over the Macs.
- Yeshiva were not without their chances to put up runs of their own. In the bottom of the first, an Ethan Zirdok pop up stranded runners on first and second, while in the bottom of the third, runners on the corners were left without a home following a Noam Ouanounou groundout.
- Despite their offensive futility however, the Maccabees rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Zahler struck out looking, Isaac Abboudi got on base following a walk, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jesse Rosenblum and Avi Cohen followed suit after drawing walks of their own, loading the bases for Kamish. Undeterred in the face of pressure, Kamish smacked a 1-2 pitch into center field, bringing all three runners in, and barely beating out the throw as he slid into third. Kamish himself would come home on the very next at bat, stomping on the plate off of an Ouanounou groundout.
- While these four runs would prove YU's only of the game, they represented the offensive potential of a team down a number of key players.
