Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Strong First Set Not Enough to Push Men’s Volleyball Over UMSV

NEW YORK, NY - Kicking off a match-filled week, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team fell to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, losing to the Dolphins by a score of 3-0 on Monday, Mar. 11.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led once again by Lavi Friedman and Eli Waxman, with Friedman posting a team-leading mark of six kills, while Waxman served up 11 assists on the night.

Proving to be stalwarts on the defensive side, Jonathan Werta and Yaakov Baker combined to form a towering tandem in front of the net, as each knocked down two blocks throughout three sets of play.

With the loss, the Macs are now 0-18, 0-9 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs got off to a slow start in the first set, seeing the Dolphins tally six points before answering with one of their own. Despite the struggles though, Yeshiva quickly shook off any rust and got to work, tying the game at 7-all. YU kept hot on UMSV's heels, not allowing the Dolphins any breathing room, before a 10-2 run halfway through the period not only gave YU their first lead of the game, but rocketed their margin out to five points at 21-16. However, despite the commanding lead, Yeshiva's cracks began to show. Over the next 11 serves, the Macs surrendered nine points to UMSV, squandering a promising start, and dropping the set, 25-23.

  • Looking to turn things around after a disappointing first set, Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead in set two, spurred on by a kill from Andrew Pinchot to go up 4-3. This lead would not last, as despite thunderous kills from Baker and Friedman, the Macs could not keep up with UMSV's fast-paced offense, falling behind, 17-10. While two consecutive Dolphin errors got YU within five at 20-15, the Maccabees simply could not catch their opponents, falling by a score of 25-16.

  • Yeshiva were able to jump out to a fast advantage in set number three, going up on the Dolphins 4-3, yet the effort would not be enough to stave off UMSV's attack. Held to just nine more points and three more kills, the Macs would ultimately drop the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
