BRONX, NY - Taking on the same opponent for the second time this week, the Yeshiva softball team fell to York College, losing to the Cardinals by scores of 24-8 and 17-4 on Sunday, Mar. 17.
Â
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by the bats of
Kayla Cagan and
Kyra Appel, with Cagan putting up a stat line of two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Appel tallied two runs, two hits and an RBI over the course of two games.
Yeshiva saw a stellar mound outing from
Rebecca Kalmar. Pitching for 0.2 innings in game two, the junior allowed just two hits and four earned runs while also tossing two strikeouts, the first of her YU career.
Â
With the losses, the Macs are now 0-6.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 24-8)
- While Yeshiva surrendered two early runs in the top of the first, the team responded right back in the bottom of the inning. Appel, Ashley Botnick, Jordyn Guritzky and Tova Hakakian all crossed home plate, rocketing the Macs out to a 4-2 lead and securing YU their first advantage of the season.
Â
- The Maccabees further expanded their margin in the bottom of the second, going up 5-2 when an Appel single brought Cagan streaking home.
Â
- However, despite the effort, YU's defense simply could not stand up to the York bats. Yeshiva surrendered 16 runs in the third inning, falling behind 18-5.
Â
- While the Macs managed to put up two more scores in the fourth and one more in the fifth, it proved not enough to wrench control of the game away from York, as Yeshiva fell by a score of 24-8.

- Yeshiva found themselves in an early hole, surrendering four runs in the first, one run in the second, and two runs in the third.
Â
- The Macs were finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the third, as both Botnick and Cagan crossed home, cutting YU's deficit to 7-2.
Â
- However, ten more York runs across the fourth and fifth innings forced Yeshiva to face an insurmountable mountain, one which two runs in the bottom of the fifth could not overcome. The Macs ultimately fell, 17-4.
