Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Comeback Comes Up Short as Men’s Volleyball Falls to Manhattanville in Five

NEW YORK, NY - Playing in just their third five-set match of the season, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team had their reverse sweep come up just short versus Manhattanville College, losing to the Valiants by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday, Mar. 19.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw another excellent outing from the duo of Lavi Friedman and Eli Waxman, with Friedman recording 15 kills, while Waxman led the team with 29 assists.

Friedman also shone on the defensive end of the court, posting squad-high marks of two blocks and 11 digs.

With the loss, the Macs are now 1-21, 1-12 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first dozen serves, seeing the score knotted up at 6-all. While this deadlock would last throughout the rest of the set, the Valiants would be able to secure some breathing room, leading by as many as seven points at 21-14. A subsequent 4-0 run kickstarted by a kill from Andrew Pinchot got the Macs back within three, yet the men in white and blue could not usurp the hold Manhattanville had on the set, falling, 25-20.

  • Unable to maintain their first set momentum, YU opened the second in a hole, seeing the Valiant put up 17 points before they could crack double digits. While the Maccabees would continue to fight, tallying seven more points thanks to kills from Friedman and Jonathan Werta, Yeshiva could not keep up with Manhattanville's explosive attack, dropping the period, 25-17.

  • Looking to prove that they can compete with anything the Skyline throws at them, the Macs kicked off the third set white hot, jumping out to a 19-11 lead off kills from Pinchot and Friedman, with that margin being pushed to 23-14. While a 4-0 Valiant run closed the gap between the two sides to five at 23-18, two final Yeshiva points slammed the door shut on the period, 25-18, handing the Macs their first set win of the night.

  • Launching the fourth set locked in a footrace, both teams sprinted out of the gate in a deadlock, seeing the score tied at 10-all through a fast 20 serves. While a 4-0 MHV run put YU in a three point hole, the Maccabees quickly rebounded, outsourcing the Valiants by a margin of 10-3 to rocket themselves out to a 20-16 advantage. Three Manhattanville points closed Yeshiva's lead to just one, yet a powerful kill from Werta shut down any hopes of a Valiant comeback, securing the set for the Macs at 25-20, and tying the match at two sets a piece.

  • Yeshiva kept up with Manhattanville's dynamic offense through the first nine serves, trailing by only one at 5-4, yet a gassed YU squad simply could not match their opponents' output. The Macs dropped the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-6, ultimately losing the match, 3-2.
