BROOKLYN, NY - Taking on their second-to-last conference opponent of the season, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team dropped a close contest to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, falling to the Bears by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday, Mar. 27.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by
Jonathan Werta and
Eli Waxman, with the former tallying 12 kills and an ace, while the latter posted 24 assists.
Waxman also had a stellar night on the defensive end of the ball, slamming down two blocks, while
Andrew Pinchot patrolled the floor and successfully scooped a team-high eight digs.
Rounding out an illustrious five-year career, Graduate Student
Michael Stark played his final game for Yeshiva, putting up seven digs in a final farewell.
With the loss, the Macs are now 1-25, 1-16 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While a definitive kill from Zanvy Lesnoy gave the Macs an early lead at 1-0, the advantage would not remain stagnant, changing hands four times through the first dozen serves. The Bears would seize it for good 7-6, and while Yeshiva would continue to fight, closing within one point on multiple occasions, including at 24-23, the Macs could not wrest control away from their opponent, falling by a score of 25-23.
- Unable to maintain their offensive momentum of the first set, the Maccabees struggled to keep up in set two. Kills from Stark, Pinchot, Werta and Yaakov Baker were not enough to match SJBK's barrage, as YU dropped the period, 25-14.
- Looking to prove their mettle against a tough conference opponent, YU jumped out to a fast lead in set three, going up 11-9 behind the offensive output of Werta, Pinchot, Baker and Lesnoy. While the Macs would cede the advantage over to SJBK, a Yoni Rubin kill at 18-21 sparked a 6-0 Maccabee run, rocketing Yeshiva out to a two-point edge at 23-21. Two more kills from Werta and Lesnoy got the Macs to 25 points before their opponent, yet the need to win by two proved their undoing. Yeshiva's point total stalled at 25, allowing three points from SJBK to close out the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-0.
