Baseball Struggles Versus Utica

WEST HARRISON, NY - Making the best of an unseasonably warm day, the Yeshiva baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Utica University on Sunday, Feb. 3, falling to the Pioneers 3-16 in game one, and 1-24 in game two.

The Maccabees saw much of their offense come off the bat of Joshua Mintz, with the Los Angeles native smacking in two RBIs and two hits on the day, leading the team in both categories.

Pitching in both games, Eli Zirdok had a stellar game on the mound. The first year pitcher was competing in just his third and fourth games as a Maccbaee, pitching for 2.2 innings and surrendering just five runs and two hits while striking out three batters.

With the losses, the Macs are now 0-4 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 3-16)
  • Utica jumped out to an early lead in game one, kicking off the scoring with a run in the first, and then adding two more in the third.

  • Despite the deficit, the Macs calmly fought back, unleashing in the bottom of the third. After Zirdok singled to center and Jesse Rosenblum drew a walk, Mintz blasted a double into left center field, bringing both men home. While Mintz was thrown out at home plate trying to stretch a single from Coby Kamish, Kamish himself found paydirt after advancing to third on an error, and scoring on a balk, leveling the contest at 3-all.

  • Unfortunately, that run proved YU's last of the game. On the other side, Utica put up 13 more runs over the next three innings, tallying one in the fifth, and 12 in the sixth.

MAC LEADERS
  • Runs: Rosenblum (1), Kamish (1), Zirdok (1)
  • RBIs: Mintz (2)
  • Hits: Rosenblum (1), Kamish (1), Zirdok (1), Mintz (1)
  • Stolen Bases: Rosenblum (1)
  • Strikeouts: Mintz (2), Zirdok (2), Zahler (1), Rosenblum (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 1-24)
  • While Yeshiva were able to hold Utica at bay through the first inning, allowing just one run, the floodgates opened in the second. The Pioneers would go on to score 23 more runs over the next six innings, dropping six in the second, seven in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh.

  • YU's lone offense came in the bottom of the fifth. After legging out a grounder to the pitcher, Zaine Weissbrot advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then, as Rosenblum grounded out to third base, Weissbrot outran the throw back to third, and took full advantage of a Utica error to come streaking home, the first run of his YU career.

  • Yeshiva were not without their chances to put up more runs, leaving men stranded on first and third in the first, and first and second in the second.

  • Hits: Weissbrot (1), Mintz (1), Kamish (1), Ouanounou (1)
