Men’s Tennis Downs Pratt, Picks Up First Win of Season

NEWARK, NJ - Notching their first W of the 2023-24 season, the Yeshiva men's tennis team defeated The Pratt Institute, felling the Cannoneers by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday, Mar. 5.

The Maccabees got off to a hot start, picking up wins in two of their three doubles matches and going into singles up 2-1. Not allowing their momentum to dissipate, Yeshiva continued to dominate in singles play, securing points in five of the six contests and taking the dual match, 7-2.

With the win, the Macs are now 1-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
  • Yeshiva kicked off doubles play strong, with the duo of Mark Adler/Israel Bussu easily downing their opponents, 8-1, and the pair of David Cattan/Leo Rahmey outlasting their foes, 8-6.

  • YU's only loss came in the No. 1 seeded slot, where the team of Sion Jacobo/Jacob Pfeifer were outdone by a score of 8-3.

  • With the two wins, the Macs went into singles leading 2-1.

Singles:
  • Kicking off right where they left off, Yeshiva continued to wrack up wins in singles play, seeing straight set victories out of Adler (7-5, 7-5), Jacobo (6-2, 6-1), Isaac Betesh (6-2, 6-3).

  • YU's biggest challenges came in the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded matches. In the No. 2 slot, after taking the first set and dropping the second, Jacob Pfiefer outlasted his Pratt opponent, 10-6, in the third set tie breaker.

  • Competition got even more intense over on the No. 1 slotted court, with play reaching a fever pitch as Cattan battled Pratt's Mikah Liu. YU's first-year phenom took the first set by a score of 6-3, yet stumbled in the second, falling 7-5. Both players slugged it out in the third set tie breaker, as neither were able to shake the other. The match extended well past the 10-point barrier of victory, with the need to win by two proving the factor that kept the players on the grass. Eventually though, after staving off three separate match points, Cattan came out on top, winning 15-13 and securing YU their seventh and final point.
