OLD WESTBURY, NY - Competing in their first 5-set match of the season, the Yeshiva men's volleyball team fell to the College at Old Westbury, losing to the Panther by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday, Mar. 5.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by a career game from
Lavi Friedman, with the senior middle blocker hammering down 20 kills and two aces on the day.
Eli Waxman also had a stellar outing serving up balls for his attackers, recording a mind-shattering 37 assists.
Proving anchors of the team on both sides of the ball, Friedman and Waxman also had monster days on defense, teaming up with
Yoni Rubin to record 38, 33 and 25 digs respectively.
With the loss, the Macs are now 0-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead in the first set, relying on Waxman's offensive output to go up 6-1 through the first seven serves. While a run from Old Westbury snatched that advantage from YU, the Macs refused to let the Panthers gain any meaningful separation, seeing the scoreboard read 18-16. However, seven straight OW points spelled the end of Yeshiva's chances at a set win, as the Macs fell, 25-17.
- Mimicking their early success of the first set, kills from Friedman and Yaakov Baker catapulted YU to an early advantage in set number two, burying the Panthers in an eight-point hole at 13-5. Yeshiva kept their edge through the remainder on the set, securing the first (of many) set points at 24-21. However, unable to connect on all three deciding points, Yeshiva saw the period go into tie-breaks knotted up at 25-all. Shaken but undeterred, YU continued to fight, staving off an OW set point 26-27, yet failing to connect on one of their own at 28-27. Finally, with the scoreboard stretching far past its intended function, the Macs finally claimed the set off of back-to-back kills from Waxman and Friedman at 31-29, securing just their second set win of the season.
- Not allowing their momentum to dissipate after an exhilarating second set, the Macs opened the third with another monster early lead, going up 11-5 thanks to the offensive production of Friedman and Zanvy Lesnoy. Despite the margin between the two squads, the Panthers fought back, and while YU were able to stave off their opponent through the majority of the period, leading at 17-16, a 6-1 OW run snuffed out Yeshiva's edge for good. The Macs would continue to fight, as thundering kills from Waxman and Friedman got the men in blue and white within one at 23-24, yet a final Old Westbury point closed out the set, 25-23.
- The Macs were not as fast out the gate in the fourth set as they were in the previous three, seeing OW claim the lead early and carry it through the majority of the period. However, while down, YU was certainly not out. The Maccabees continued to scrap, keeping their foes within striking distance at all times and never allowing the gap between the two to stretch more than four points. Finding the perfect time to strike, Yeshiva tied the period at 17-all, and ran away with the set from there. Driven by the right hands of Lesnoy, Friedman and Jonothan Werta, Yeshiva outscored Old Westbury 9-4 over the final 13 serves, taking the set, 25-21 and leveling the match at two a piece.
- Experiencing a fifth set for the first time since March of 2023, the Maccabees were ready, putting up six points before the Panthers had a chance to respond. While YU's momentum faltered, as seven straight points from OW hitters snatched the lead away from YU, the Macs responded in turn, leveling the playing field three different times at 9-all, 11-all and 14-all. It was then though, that despite their excellent play all evening, the Macs faltered in a crucial moment. An uncharacteristic service error from Friemdman handed Old Westbury a match point, one that the Panthers won on a Baker attack error. As the dust cleared, the Macs had fallen, 16-14, and had dropped the set, 3-2.
