Baseball Battles Weather as Maccabees Fall at SJLI

PATCHOGUE, NY - Braving the harsh Long Island climate, the Yeshiva baseball team traveled out to St. Joseph's University Long Island, falling to the Golden Eagles by scores of 17-0 and 22-2 on Friday, Apr. 12.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw their scores run in by Avi Cohen and Aden Frohlich, while Eli Zirdok's bat proved the most effective with two hits and an RBI.

Frohlich also had a stellar day on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings while allowing just three hits and zero earned runs.

With the losses, the Macs are now 0-20, 0-14 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 1 (L, 17-0)
  • Yeshiva's defense struggled to keep SJLI off the board in game one, surrendering six runs in the second inning, five in the third, five in the fourth and one in the sixth.

  • Unfortunately, YU's offense was not able to match that pace, only managing three hits. Two of those came in the top of the third, when back-to-back singles from Ezra Sicklick and Cohen put men on first and second with no one out. However, a double-play ball and a strikeout left Sicklick stranded on third.

MAC LEADERS
  • Hits: Cohen (1), Ganopolsky (1), Sicklick (1)
  • Strikeouts: Kamish (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED - Game 2 (L, 22-2)
  • Maccabee bats saw much more success in game two, putting up two runs on the board.

  • Both of YU's scores came in the top of the fifth. Frohlich reached first after blasting a single to right center, and then took full advantage of a throwing error by the catcher to come home. Cohen followed right behind his teammate, drawing a walk, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch, and then scoring on a Zirdok single to right field.

  • Despite the success, the Macs could not keep up with SJLI's production, as the Golden Eagles posted five runs in the first inning, one run in the second, two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and 11 runs in the fifth.

MAC LEADERS
  • Runs: Cohen (1), Frohlich (1)
  • Hits: Zirdok (2), Shakin (2), Perl (1), Frohlich (1)
  • RBIs: Zirdok (1)
  • Stolen Bases: Cohen (1)
  • Strikeouts: Shakin (4)
